• This section of I-80 is a heavily-traveled route leading into NYC and the existing bridges over the Rockaway River were in poor condition, thus precipitating the $20.8M federally-funded project. 

• Stantec, the design consultant for NJDOT on this project, designed the new bridges to utilize the existing abutments in combination with ultra-lightweight foamed glass aggregate backfill.

• UL-FGA was used to minimize lateral earth pressures on the vertical abutment extension.
