AeroAggregates LLC is the first vertically-integrated, U.S.-based company to produce lightweight aggregates from 100% recycled glass. Our manufacturing capabilities include the ability to make several types of foamed glass including both open and closed cell aggregates.
The founders of AeroAggregates realized the need for a sustainable solution for lightweight construction materials due to increased design or constructability requirements. Today’s civil engineering challenges include construction on soft soils, lateral load reduction behind retaining walls and structures, insulating subgrade and backfill, and the protection of underground utilities. AeroAggregates provides an answer to many of these challenges by supplying a lightweight material with a high friction angle that is also insulating, free-draining, non-absorbent, non-combustible, and resistant to chemicals, rot and acid. Its manufacturing plant is located in Eddystone, PA, a brownfield redevelopment site that was formerly the location of Baldwin Locomotive Works.

MICHAEL KOERNER
Vice President - Process Engineering
Originally from Philadelphia, Michael Koerner studied chemical engineering at Drexel and Princeton universities. He joined DuPont Automotive, now Axalta Coatings formulating basecoat paints for automotive OEMs. After a five-year assignment in Germany, he transitioned to technology development of waterborne paints. Mike led a research group to develop technology for coatings with higher productivity, lower bake temperatures, and digital application.
After 34 years working with paint, Mike elected to move to Aero Aggregates for the manufacture of foamed glass aggregates (FGA). It's been a fresh start working with a sustainable product in a rapidly developing market. Processing of FGA includes a nice mix of chemistry, physics, and engineering principles. He finds it gratifying to see new process improvements literally rolling off the line one hour after implementation. Mike is married with two adult children (also engineers) and enjoys many outdoor activities.
MARY KOERNER
Administrative Services Manager
Raised in Port Huron, Michigan, Mary Koerner studied economics at University of Michigan where she was also a varsity high jumper. She has a wide variety of experiences, working with small nonprofits to multinational companies like Ford. Much of her work has been in a business analyst role with emphasis on project management and automation. She has a personal drive to ensure good data is available to inform business decision making.
Mary joined Aero Aggregates in 2019 where she has witnessed significant growth. Her current responsibilities include logistics, Salesforce administration, accounts payable, accounts receivable and general office management. Mary is the lone economist in a family of Koerner engineers and is not bashful to bring an outsider’s view to any conversation. She is a travel buff and a hiking enthusiast.
Technical Sales Managers
RICK SMITH, P.G.
Technical Sales Manager
Rick Smith joined the Aero Aggregates team in July of 2019 as a Technical Sales Manager (TSM) for the Mid-Atlantic Region and developing territories. As a TSM, his responsibilities include quoting projects, increasing product awareness through in-person or online interactions, as well as preliminary project management and site assistance for new and ongoing projects. Rick began his career as an engineering geologist focused on the design and construction of deep foundation systems and earth retaining structures. After spending 18 years in that role, Rick joined an international geosynthetics company as a sales manager focused on geosynthetics for ground improvement and reinforced structures.
From an early age, Rick was intrigued by the natural sciences and remains dedicated to protecting the environment through sustainable development and recycling as well as the protection of biodiversity through encouraging native species. His dedication is reflected in both his professional career path with Aero Aggregates and his personal life advocating for small, simple, sustainable living. Outside of the world of Foamed Glass, you are likely to find him with his family, working in the garden, visiting secondhand stores to give goods a second life or trying to limit the destruction caused by the 35 pounds of running chainsaw that is his rescued terrier.
